ZYGMUNT STENWAK

PASTELE 1995-2023

Jego obrazy ożywia napięcie pomiędzy dwoma biegunami egzystencji: z jednej strony ponadczasowy i niewzruszony porządek kosmiczny, z drugiej energia twórczej wolności.

In an art world dominated by irony and appropriation, by visual oneliners, the works of Polish-born artist Zygmunt Stenwak come as something of a shock. Determinedly philosophical, they inhabit a very unpostmodern cultural space, untouched by those relentless „synergistic” market forces making art, fashion, and advertising ever more indistinguishable.

Stenwak is a mystic, albeit one with a rigorous analytic system. Using a technique of his own invention, he heavily layers pastels to produce luminous, charged atmospheres, alternately energetic and meditative. His pictures are animated by the tension between two levels of existence, two forces: the eternal order of the universe and the energy of the creative will. In his conception, all his pictures are bound by earth and sky, by heaven and horizon – representing harmony and peace – while between these horizontals, the drama of color or what he calls „condensations of energy” takes place on vertical levels, in sharp edges, geometric shapes, and flashes of mystical light. It is this drama which gives his mostly small pictures their striking impression of monumentality.

Despite this underlying philosophical purpose, Stenwak’s pictures are not programatic in any normal sense of the term. Stenwak is mainly interested in creating different moods, different fields of force, in exploring states of being. He uses color and shape to form individual symbolic representations of space and time, to create imaginary associations between objects, to blur the boundary between dream and reality. His titles, too, are suggestive without being specific: „The Unknown House „, „This World Is Not the Same Anymore „, „Mystery of Happiness „, „Dead Time”.

Stenwak’s poetic, spiritual side is strongly balanced by rigorous technique. His mastery of pastel is of the highest order, and in his restless pursuit of new effects of color and light he has expanded the vocabulary of contemporary art.

Together this technique and imagination have been combined to create what Stenwak calls an „optimistic” art. His spiritual pictures are intended at their deepest level to communicate the links between human creativity and the beauty and timeless order of the universe itself. In that sense, his works are mystical and humanistic at the same time, abstractions and joyful celebrations of sensuality and spirit.
